Come sundown on 18 December, Jews the world over will light their first menorah candle to mark the start of Hanukkah. The annual Festival of Lights is a celebration of the Maccabee’s punchy revolt against the Greek Seleucid Empire and rededication of Jerusalem’s desecrated temple, where a menorah was miraculously kept aflame for eight days with 24 hour’s oil supply. Ergo – a lengthy holiday where scoffing oil-fried delights, such as latkes and doughnuts, is out-and-out divine.
