Whiskey Tasting with A Friend featuring Old Forester

Memories. As we think about what matters most when having a whiskey tasting with a friend, it’s the memories that are created while experiencing history in a glass. Recently, I was able to introduce on of my closest friends to the Old Forester brand by hosting a mini-tasting showcasing three bourbons.

When selecting which three bourbons for this tasting, there were few details that were considered: proof, flavor profile and story. Since I was the one introducing these spirits, I was fully aware of the order in which I wanted to have Sean experience each one. The goal was to take him on a journey of vast flavor. Below is the tasting order and some notes on each selection:

  • 1870 Original Batch – a bourbon crafted from barrels from three different warehouses that is reminiscent of how OF was originally distilled and bottled. With a taste of citrus fruits and baking spices the 1870 is perfectly suited for tasting – especially with its soft finish.
  • 86 Proof Straight Kentucky Bourbon – this was my introduction to the brand and it’s smart (in my opinion) to have it bridge the gap in the tasting. With an initial spice upon tasting that pulls you in, this bourbon finishes with a sweet note that makes it the ideal all-round spirit. Outstanding choice for a classic cocktail like an Old-Fashioned.
  • 1897 Bottled In Bond – from a taste perspective, the 1897 Bottled in Bond bourbon is a full-bodied standout. With rich vanilla and warm coffee notes that are followed up by spiced dark fried and matured oak – the 1897 is one of the best sipping whiskies I’ve ever experienced.

These are just a few of the whiskies from Old Forester that I presented during this tasting, however; there are more in the family that I’ll be investigating further.
