Turning Our Apartment Into An Art Space

What’s Up Everybody! Without further ado, welcome to my apartment here at The Poplar! I’ve been excited to share my space for a while now and there’s no better way than showing how my love of art & design are on display. Constructed in 1918, The Poplar is the former warehouse of the popular flagship department store – Strawbridge & Clothiers (center city Philly).

As a resident, you’ll be treated to the preserved history of exposed brick, mushroom columns, and a double height fitness center (it’s 10,000 Square Feet). It’s truly been an amazing experience living here and taking advantage of all the amenities (you have to see the Solmar Terrace) If you’re in the market for a new apartment in Philly, I recommend setting up a tour of the 285 unit, residential  masterpiece  The Poplar – and give me a shout when you do!

But First, ART (Living Room Edition)

When thinking about decorating our 690 square foot, one bedroom apartment, my girlfriend and took our combined loved of a black & white aesthetic of black and used it as our base (furniture). That left room for us to use artwork, sculptures, and plants/flowers as our pops of colors & texture. Our main living room gallery wall is slightly personal and is a mix of things we like. Some years ago, I freelanced for GQ and I acquired that large foamboard magazine cover after hosting an event. Ironically, my girlfriend is a HUGE Taylor Swift fan, so it works as melding of both words.

Next, The Dining Space

With the open concept, we wanted the dining space to feel like were seated outside, especially if you were facing away from the window. So, the painting we chose is of a Parisian biking scene. Think café chic. Plus, the gray hues of the painting pair perfectly with the Quartz countertops and stainless-steel appliances in the kitchen. And, once again – more flowers.

But, I think my personal favorite art space is the wall adjacent to the bar cart. We recently attended an art exhibit in the Fishtown section of Philly, and all the art displays were abstract and bit trippy. At that moment, we decided to incorporate that style in our space.

The Entry Way

We had this idea to create an entry way that felt like a room when you entered our apartment. So, the art pieces needed to be bold! Keeping with a black & white motif, we found this painted muli-bowl pieces and flanked it by simple painting.

Both pieces add texture and dimension to the space. For more depth, we’ve used brass and gold metals and ceramics to make a subtle statement.
